Monash Research Training Program Scholarship Overview

The Department of Education oversees the Commonwealth scheme that funds these competitive awards for all HDR candidates entering a higher degree by research. Designed for both domestic students and international applicants, the merit-based selection process evaluates candidate credentials through strict faculty allocation metrics based on potential research impact. Whether an applicant focuses on STEM subjects, humanities, social sciences, or interdisciplinary research, the Monash Graduate Research Office (MGRO) handles candidate processing during each formal scholarship round. Securing a main round award ensures complete tuition waiver status and financial peace of mind.

Positioned among Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8 universities), Monash maintains a firm position among the world’s top 50 universities. This international institutional prestige guarantees access to world-class world ranking departments and advanced research infrastructure.

Financial Coverage and Benefits for International Students

Receiving the RTP scholarship guarantees comprehensive financial coverage and an extensive suite of scholarship benefits. Awardees receive an annual stipend distributed as a fortnightly allowance directly into their Australian bank accounts. To ease relocation stress, international scholars receive a dedicated relocation allowance covering airfare coverage and an initial establishment grant. Monash also provides generous provisions for paid sick leave, maternity leave, and extended parental leave without compromising award continuity.

International candidates benefit from complete Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which includes single cover or family cover options for full health insurance protection throughout their stay. The award includes a thesis allowance and printing allowance to assist during final submission. Because the stipend is a tax-free stipend, it covers the typical cost of living Australia demands. This robust financial support ensures full tuition coverage at current stipend rate 2027 levels, which undergo annual indexation alongside potential travel grant and conference allowance allocations.
