The package includes a range of provisions, from a substantial stipend to complete coverage of housing and healthcare insurance. The aim is to provide a stable and supportive environment from the moment a student arrives.
Complete Tuition Support
One of the most significant benefits is full tuition support. All students admitted to KAUST receive a tuition waiver, meaning they pay absolutely no tuition fees for the duration of their graduate program. This benefit covers all academic costs and university fees, making a higher education degree from this elite institution completely free. This level of 100% funded support is a key component of the financial aid package and is awarded based on merit scholarship principles to all admitted students.
Monthly Living Allowance
In addition to free tuition, all KAUST scholars receive a monthly living allowance. This monthly stipend is one of the most competitive in the world for graduate students. The stipend amount typically ranges from $20,000 to $30,000 annually, depending on qualification and degree progress, with PhD candidates often receiving a higher rate. This allowance is intended to cover all personal expenses and cost of living, providing students with financial security and a stable monthly income that can be managed through local student banking services.
On-Campus Housing
KAUST provides high-quality, furnished housing to all its students. The campus housing is located within a secure and vibrant on-campus community. Students are typically provided with a modern private apartment or a shared apartment, and all housing costs covered by the fellowship often include utilities. This benefit ensures that international students have a comfortable and convenient living arrangement from day one, contributing positively to student life.
Comprehensive Medical and Dental Coverage
Health and well-being are a top priority at KAUST. The scholarship includes a comprehensive plan for medical insurance and dental coverage. This student insurance policy, managed by KAUST Health, provides access to excellent health services, including an on-campus clinic and coverage for emergency care. This ensures students have the healthcare benefits they need throughout their studies, offering peace of mind for both them and their families.
Relocation and Travel Support
Recognizing that its students come from all over the world, KAUST offers extensive relocation and travel support. This includes round-trip airfare for the student’s initial relocation to the university and for their final departure after graduation. The travel allowance also helps cover moving expenses and baggage allowance, easing the transition of study abroad. This support extends to assisting with visa services for students, making the immigration process smoother.
Academic Programs Offered for KAUST Scholars
KAUST is exclusively a graduate university, offering a focused array of degree level programs designed to push the boundaries of knowledge. The academic programs are structured to foster deep specialization while encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. Students can pursue a Master of Science (M.S.), a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), or an integrated M.S./Ph.D. combined program.
The curriculum for each course of study is rigorous, research-oriented, and tailored to the latest advancements in each discipline. While KAUST does not offer online degree programs, its immersive, on-campus experience is central to its educational philosophy. The graduate admissions process is highly selective, seeking candidates who demonstrate exceptional potential for research and innovation. This focus on excellence is what makes KAUST a top choice for those seeking advanced university admissions and college admissions.
Master of Science (M.S.) Programs
The Master’s degree programs at KAUST are typically completed in one and a half years to two years. These M.S. programs combine intensive coursework with a significant research thesis component. The curriculum is designed to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in their chosen STEM fields. These program options in applied science and engineering disciplines prepare graduates for high-level roles in industry or for continuing on to a Ph.D. The academic requirements for the master’s admissions process are stringent to ensure students can thrive in this demanding environment.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programs
The Ph.D. programs are the cornerstone of KAUST’s identity as a research institution. These doctoral studies, which typically last four to five years, are centered on conducting original research that culminates in a dissertation. Students work closely with faculty mentors on projects aimed at making a significant contribution to knowledge and achieving scientific discovery. The PhD admissions process seeks candidates with a clear research vision and a passion for an academic career or a role in advanced industrial R&D. The research-intensive nature of the postgraduate research programs is designed to produce the next generation of scientific leaders.
M.S./Ph.D. Combined Program
For highly motivated and advanced students, KAUST offers an M.S./Ph.D. program. This integrated track provides a seamless transition from master’s level coursework directly into doctoral candidacy. It is a fast-track option for students who are certain of their research focus and wish to pursue a doctorate. This combined degree program, which can take around five years to complete, follows a structured academic pathway where strong student progress in the M.S. portion leads directly to Ph.D. research without needing a separate application.
Key Academic Divisions and Research Centers
KAUST’s academic structure is uniquely designed to break down traditional departmental silos and promote interdisciplinary research. The university is organized into three main academic divisions: BESE, CEMSE, and PSE. This framework is complemented by a network of strategic research centers and core labs that bring together scientists and engineers from different fields to collaborate on complex global challenges.
This interdisciplinary approach is fundamental to KAUST’s success, allowing for innovative solutions in areas like water desalination, sustainable energy, and artificial intelligence. The divisions and centers provide the intellectual home for students and faculty, offering access to unparalleled resources and expertise.
Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE)
The BESE division, short for Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering, focuses on the study of life sciences and their interaction with the environment. Programs within this division include Bioscience, Plant Science, Marine Science, and Environmental Science and Engineering. Given KAUST’s location on the Red Sea, there is a strong emphasis on Red Sea research. Eligibility Criteria for the KAUST Scholarship 2027
The eligibility criteria for the KAUST scholarship are synonymous with the university’s admission requirements. As the fellowship is automatically awarded to all admitted students, the focus is on meeting the high standards for the 2027 intake. The selection criteria are designed to identify applicant qualifications that demonstrate outstanding academic potential and a strong fit with KAUST’s research-focused environment.
Prospective students should carefully review these requirements on the application portal before starting their application. Meeting the minimum requirements is the first step, but a competitive application will exceed them. For those unsure about their profile, seeking advice from study abroad consultants can be beneficial, but the university’s official guidelines are the ultimate reference.
Eligible Nationalities
KAUST prides itself on its diversity and welcomes applications from All Nationalities. The university fosters a truly global environment, with a student body representing over 100 countries. There are no restrictions based on country of origin, and both Saudi and non-Saudi students are encouraged to apply. This commitment to equal opportunity is central to attracting global talent and enriching the campus community. Successful international students will be assisted with the student visa and immigration policy procedures.
Required Academic Background
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (for M.S. programs) or a Master’s degree (for direct Ph.D. entry) from an accredited institution. The undergraduate degree should be in a relevant field, specifically in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). A strong record of academic excellence is crucial, demonstrated by academic transcripts. While KAUST does not state a rigid minimum GPA, successful applicants typically have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 or higher from their prior education. The university ranking of the applicant’s previous institution can also be a factor.
English Language Proficiency Requirements
As the official language of instruction at KAUST is English, all applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. This is typically done by submitting official scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS exams. The minimum score required is a 79 on the TOEFL iBT or an IELTS band score of 6.5. A waiver may be granted for applicants who have earned a degree from an accredited English-speaking university, where English was the primary medium of instruction. These language requirements ensure that all students have the communication skills needed for a rigorous academic English environment.
Standardized Test Scores (GRE)
Submitting scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not mandatory for admission to KAUST. The university has made the GRE optional. However, it is highly recommended. Submitting strong GRE scores, particularly in the quantitative reasoning and analytical writing sections, can significantly strengthen an application and provide a competitive edge. Applicants should decide whether submitting scores will enhance their profile. The university does not consider the GMAT.
Step-by-Step Application Process for the KAUST Scholarship
The application process for the KAUST scholarship is streamlined and conducted entirely online. This step-by-step guide outlines the required steps for prospective students navigating the university application process. Since the scholarship is tied to admission, the focus is on creating a compelling application for your chosen graduate program. It’s crucial to follow the application guide carefully and adhere to the admission deadline.
The online application system allows you to complete the form, upload documents, and track your application status. A well-prepared and timely submission is key to being considered for the admission cycle.
Step 1: Review Program Requirements and Deadlines
Before starting, the first step is to thoroughly review requirements for your specific program of interest. Check the official website for detailed admission criteria and the application timeline. Pay close attention to the application deadline for the fall intake or spring intake. It is essential to prepare in advance and understand the expectations for the research programs you are applying to.
Step 2: Prepare the Required Application Documents
The next step is to prepare documents and gather all the necessary paperwork. Create a checklist of the required documents, which will include your official transcripts, CV, statement of purpose, and passport copy. Make sure to scan documents in a high-quality digital format (usually PDF). Having all application materials ready before you begin the online form will make the process much smoother.
Step 3: Complete the Online Application Form
Navigate to the official KAUST application portal and create an account. Carefully fill in details on the online application form, including your personal information, academic history, and stated research interests. The portal will prompt you to upload documents in the designated sections. You can usually save progress and return to it later, but always review carefully to ensure all accurate information is provided before final submission.
Step 4: Submit Your Application and Pay the Fee (If Any)
Once you have filled out the form and uploaded all documents, perform a final check. Then, submit application through the portal. A major advantage of applying to KAUST is that there is no application fee, removing a potential financial barrier for applicants. After submission, you should receive a confirmation email, and you can use the portal for application tracking.
Step 5: The Interview and Selection Process
After the initial faculty review, shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview. This is a critical part of the selection process and is usually conducted as an online interview via video call (e.g., Skype or Zoom). The interview assesses your academic potential, research fit, and motivation. You may be asked technical questions related to your field. Following the interview, the admissions committee makes its final decision, and you will receive a notification of the offer of admission.
Required Documents for the Application
A complete and well-organized set of required documents is crucial for a successful application. All application materials must be uploaded as high-quality scanned copies in PDF format to the online portal. This document checklist outlines the essential paperwork needed to complete your admission packet.
Ensure that all supporting documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and translated into English if the original is in another language. The clarity and professionalism of your document submission reflect your seriousness as a candidate.
Official University Transcripts
You must provide official transcripts from every previous institution attended for your undergraduate studies and any postgraduate work. These academic records should include your grades, GPA, and the grading scale used by the university. You will also need to upload a copy of your degree certificate or graduation diploma. If the original documents are not in English, a certified English translation is required to show your academic performance.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume
A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume is required. This document should highlight your academic background, any research experience, a list of publications or presentations, and any honors or awards you have received. Also include relevant skills, work experience, and internships. A clear, concise, and professional CV helps the admissions committee quickly understand your qualifications and potential for contributing to campus jobs or research.
Statement of Purpose (SoP)
The Statement of Purpose (SoP) is one of the most important parts of your application. This well-written essay is your chance to communicate your motivation for pursuing graduate studies. You must clearly articulate your research interests, academic goals, and long-term career aspirations. It’s crucial to explain why KAUST is the right place for you, mentioning specific faculty or research groups you wish to work with and what contribution you hope to make. A compelling SoP can set you apart.
Letters of Recommendation
You will need to submit three Letters of Recommendation (LOR). These should be from professors or supervisors who know you well and can speak to your academic and research abilities. Choose your referees carefully and provide them with information about your application. The online submission system will send a request directly to your recommenders to submit a confidential report. A strong recommendation from a respected academic reference can significantly boost your chances.
English Proficiency Test Scores (TOEFL/IELTS)
Applicants must submit valid scores from an English language test as proof of English proficiency. You need to send an official score report of your TOEFL scores (from ETS) or IELTS scores (from the British Council or IDP). Make sure your scores meet the minimum requirements and are not expired. Check the university’s policy for waiver conditions if you believe you are exempt from this English language test.
Valid Passport
A scanned copy of your valid passport is required for identification purposes. The scan should clearly show the biographical page with your photo, name, passport number, and expiration date. This travel document is essential for international applicant verification and will be needed for future visa requirements and immigration processes if you are admitted.
Application Deadlines and Important Dates for 2027 Intake
Staying informed about the application deadline and other important dates is critical for a successful application. KAUST typically offers a main fall admission intake each year, with the application window opening many months in advance. While the university sometimes uses rolling admissions, there is a final deadline by which all materials must be submitted for the 2027 intake.
Applicants should regularly check the official KAUST admissions website for the most up-to-date admission timeline. The notification date for admission offers is usually announced a few months after the deadline. Plan your application around these future deadlines to ensure you have ample time to prepare a high-quality submission for the next academic year, including potential end-of-year 2027 milestones.
